Georgie Nakima
My work combines geometric patterns with vivid and abstract colors that highlight symmetry and the complex beauty of nature. The thesis of this work is rooted in Afrofuturism as an offering to affirm the intergenerational connection and testimony of the Diaspora. My background in Life sciences inspires me to bridge the network of ecosystems into my work on a micro and macro level. This work is created to remind us of the intersectionality of our shared world.
Using patterns, texture, and textiles, my goal is to transform the basics of portrait work and identity into a deeper dialogue of imagination and evolution. As a self-taught artist, my practice merges painting and illustration techniques and has expanded into large scale 2D and 3D installations on wood and metal surfaces. My public art explores the value of creative placekeeping as an extension of creative placemaking, acknowledging the social fabric of traditional and native life that has maintained the world we share.
